The Sovereign Coin of the Realm

The Compact of Gonwyn established a unified and standard currency for the Empire D'Aen. Originally denominated in silver and brass, the currency is now denominated in gold, with lesser coins valued in fractions of the base coin, the Plate. While it is technically legal for a Cher'ad to establish its own currency, the rules of the compact require that all coin be denominated in Sovereign units. As a result, no Cher'ad has minted anything other than Sovereign currency for thousands of years. Even Noruunan coin is minted to match the weights set by the Aeger D'Aen.

Bane: Its value set at a mere fifth the value of a copper wheat, the bane is minted out of iron and in many areas of the Empire is worth more melted down than for its face value. The obverse is the symbol of Marvair's transit. The reverse shows a simple circle.

Wheat: Cast in copper and worth a tenth of a haunch, wheat coins are the small currency of the lower classes and make up the bulk of coin in rural markets. The obverse is a sheaf of wheat, the reverse is bare.

Haunch: The haunch is the oldest coin in the realm and was originally the base unit of Sovereign currency.  Eight haunches are worth one plate. The obverse of the haunch typically carries the Signet symbol of the Cher'ad in which it was pressed.  The reverse is the image of a horse's hindquarters.

Plate: Minted in Mor for the past several Saeculum, the plate is the standard coin of the realm. Embossed on each side with an image of vines (the Signet D'Mor) it is also known as a "punch" after its small hole. Lenders frequently bundle a number of plates together, threading them in long chains. Plates are small, about half the size of a copper wheat.

Facet: Worth 20 plates, the facet represents wealth. For most poor and rural families, two or three facets constitute the bulk of a year's wages or earnings. More common among the wealthy, the peerage, and in major urban centers, the facet is large and heavy, weighing exactly twenty times a single punch.

Proof: The value of a proof varies. Essentially a cheque drawn on a lender's account, the proof is used where the bulk of gold would be unweildy or impractical to carry. The Empire also officially issues Saro D'Aen, proofs backed by the credit of the Empire itself.
